Mass resignations at the Slovak National Gallery
On 27 January 2025, a group of employees of the Slovak National Gallery announced at a press conference that around 100 employees would be submitting their resignations and leaving the gallery as of 1 April 2025, with more resignations likely to follow.
On 7 August 2024, Slovakia’s Minister of Culture, Martina Šimkovičová, dismissed the director of the Slovak National Gallery, Alexandra Kusá. Since Kusá’s dismissal, the institution has been run by three interim directors, with Jaroslav Niňaj currently in charge.
In November 2024, 177 staff members of the Slovak National Gallery urged the Minister of Culture to appoint a qualified professional with expertise in managing state institutions. This request was not granted, and since then, the gallery has lost the trust of international institutions as well as the financial support of Tatra Bank.
As a result of the mass resignations, the gallery’s bookshop and digital services will cease operations from April onwards, while the future of its library and the organization of educational and other related programs remains uncertain.
